Raising Voices is the Vancouver Island region’s very own youth outreach program dedicated to spoken word (aka slam) poetry. Our poets offer workshops and performances that introduce students to poetry as something that’s valuable, empowering, and fun. Our roster of poets includes award-winning published authors, national poetry slam all-stars, and some of the best emerging artists in Canadian spoken word. Employing a wide range of styles, our poets make poetry fun and engaging for everyone!
WHAT WE OFFER
Introductory Workshop for grades 6 to 12 (60-80 minutes)
Raising Voices workshops are interactive presentations with the power to transform even the most diehard poetry haters into poetry lovers! One or two poets visit your school to lead workshops for as many as 35 students at a time. Each workshop consists of a live performance, an overview of spoken word and poetry slam, and a series of fun-filled writing and performance exercises. These workshops can be adapted to meet the needs of your students or your curriculum.
Pro-D Workshop for teachers (up to 3 hours)
Why let your students have all the fun? Raising Voices offers workshops to teachers for Professional Development days that are not only insightful and thought-provoking, but also a total blast! For up to three hours, two poets lead teachers through a hands-on experience that involves a private performance, fun-filled writing and performance exercises, and lots of time for discussing practical applications of spoken word in the classroom.
